Paving the way for equality: Disability Inclusive Development training to elected members.

The two-day disability-inclusive development training was completed at the Conference hall of Gurans Rural Municipality in Ranimatta Dailekh. The training, which commenced on January 6th and concluded on 7th January 2025, aimed to promote an inclusive rural municipality through a community-based inclusive development model. On the first day, participants explored the definition, classification, and types of disabilities as outlined in the UNCRPD and the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2074. The session covered accessibility, strategies for eliminating barriers, and creating an inclusive environment. Discussions also emphasized the role of local governments in promoting inclusive development and examined international and national disability laws, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The second day began with an activity on accessible physical infrastructure, followed by an introduction to digital accessibility, including inclusive technology, easy-to-understand language, and sign language. Participants learned about the importance of making all rural municipality information accessible to everyone. Additionally, there was an orientation on the rights, roles, and responsibilities of the local coordination committee and guidance on developing inclusive programs. Each ward chair and representative completed a community-based inclusive development checklist to assess the progress needed for true inclusivity.

The final session focused on designing disability-inclusive development programs and conducting needs assessments, equipping participants with tools to create more inclusive and accessible communities.

Disability Inclusive Training

Following the training, Shiva Kumari Khadka, Vice-Chairperson of Gurans Rural Municipality, committed to developing a program specifically for persons with disabilities. Similarly, Mr. Kashi Ram Sharma, Ward Chair of Gurans RM 3, pledged to support the institutional development of ward-level organizations for persons with disabilities.

A total of 30 participants attended the training, including 22 males and 8 females, with one participant being a person with a disability.
