Amrita Khadka’s Journey to Self-Reliance and Hope

Amrita Khadka is a 21-year-old girl born in 2003 A.D. in Gurans-1, Khadka Wada, Dailekh. She is the only daughter of her parents, Tikaram and Jhuma Khadka. Amrita completed SEE but faced many difficulties after her marriage in 2021 A.D.

Amrita experienced neglect throughout her pregnancy due to her visual impairments. Eventually, her husband left her, and she gave birth to a baby girl on the 30th of January 2023. Left with no choice, she returned to her parents' home, where she worked to support her family and engaged in labor work to sustain herself and her child.

Amrita’s life began to change when she joined the Srijansil Self-Help Group, supported by the BIKASH Project. This project, implemented by Everest Club Dailekh with funding from CBM Global, provided her with training and guidance.

Through monthly meetings conducted in SHGs, Amrita learned about the rights and opportunities available for persons with disabilities. Among other topics, she received life-skills training and SIYB (Start and Improve Your Business) training, which enabled her to develop her confidence to start a small business.

Amrita shares her experience:

"Earlier, I did not know how to express myself or plan for my future. I felt helpless. But after joining the self-help group, I realized that I could take charge of my life."

With the knowledge gained through the training organized by BIKASH, Amrita has started planning for a poultry farming business as a means of self-employment. She hopes to receive further support through livelihood programs, which could help her establish a sustainable income source to support her daughter and family.
